Monochromatic Illustration

For this monochromatic Illustration, I decided to do a stylized portrait of myself and my cat, Binx. This illustration takes place in a winter setting with a large, arched window. When looking up inspiration for stylized portraits, I really liked the illustration style of Owen Davey. Before this project, I had not known of his illustration work, but I will be adding it to the inspiration I frequently reference. One of the most challenging parts of this illustration was deciding how to depict myself in the inspired style. For some reason, I always seem to struggle with successfully creating a self-portrait in any kind of style. I believe I accomplished the look I set out to achieve. For the monochromatic color palette, the idea was to create an illustration that explored the extreme dark end of the color palette and the extreme light end. Using a dark interior contrasted against the bright window created an opportunity for artistic highlights and shadows. I chose a dark emerald green color for the monochromatic palette because it would best communicate the deep, rich shades of nighttime and the winter themes I wanted to portray.
