Midnight Ink
A Book of Poetry Written, Illustrated, and Designed by Jason Moore
This project is a collection of original poetry and illustrations. I do not really consider myself a poet–rather, a songwriter. As a musician, I have written songs to reason and work through things throughout my life. When thinking about ideas for a project for my publication design class, my writings came to mind immediately. I have never published them , so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to immortalize the songs I’ve written that might never be recorded. For the purposes of my book, I will refer to the writings as poems. The poems in this book deal with themes like family, truth, love, heartbreak, death, and inadequacy. Some of these stories are real moments from my life, while others are made up entirely to deal with things I don’t understand. My only hesitancy when I began this project was being vulnerable in publishing these writings. It is equivalent to letting the world read my diary. That made me a little nervous. However, I believe that kind of writing makes for the most engaging and authentic publications. The content of this project primarily targets young adults between the ages of 18-30. Though the book’s audience could be broadened because the writings in this book wrestle with topics that people of all ages deal with. I wrote the songs and poetry printed in the book during my twenties and early thirties, so the writing style and illustration combination would likely resonate with others of that age group.
